Background Checks: Do Them Right!
Background checks are a valuable hiring tool; part of a proactive strategy to build the best, safest workforce.
However, like any other tool, there are times when background checks are not perfect—especially when they are used improperly.
A faulty background check could unfairly cost a candidate the job. That is why it is important to understand the rules and regulations of background checks, how to use them properly to make the right hiring decision, and when to use a little common sense.
In a story by Josh Brodsky for The Arizona Republic—reposted in USA Today—a candidate for a housekeeping position was confused with a woman found guilty of dangerous drug possession. The job was withdrawn, and now she is taking her case to the U.S. District Court.
Name confusion can be troublesome in performing a criminal background check. That makes it even more important to carefully consider any criminal record in making a hiring decision. If a company outsources hiring services, it just as important that they go with a professional and reputable service.
