Part-Time Workers: A “New Normal” in Hospitality, Retail

NPRAfter years of being battered by a slow economy, retailers and the hospitality industry are beginning to see a “new normal”—relying more on part-time workers to help keep costs in check. These groups of employees are asked to be extremely flexible—available to cover various shifts, often at a moment’s notice.

This new aspect of temporary workers, interns, contract labor and other part-time staff are changing the way many look at the concept of “work.” Increasingly, employees have to make due with variable and unpredictable schedules, making the most of every hour worked.

‘Tis the Season for Temp Workers [Infographic]

Every year, seasonal employees help businesses survive the onslaught of the holidays.

This fall, we can expect good tidings in year-end hiring, since holiday online sales are projected to increase 12 percent from last year’s record of more than $37 billion, according to retail analysts at Shop.Org.

Amazon alone plans to add 50,000 temporary workers for the holidays. This extra employment will make sure businesses ends the year with a bang.  With temp workers, companies can hope to make it through the holidays without relying on extra year-round staff .

As it is with any hires, finding the right temp employee takes extensive effort and training. In the rush of the busy holiday season, often there is little time to deal with bad hires.
